Interphase is the stage before mitosis (G1 phase, S phase, G2 phase). This is where the cell prepares for mitosis. Prophase is the actual first stage of mitosis. In Prophase the chromosomes condense and become visible. The nuclear membrane and the nucleolus disappear in this stage. Metaphase then comes after Prophase.
