The petal is found inside the sepal, and it attracts pollinators to the flower. The sepal protects the flower while it's developing (it is green and leaf-like).
Think of the petal as a son, and the septal as the mother. Because: the son wants to look as nice as he can to attract as many girls(pollinators) and the sepals as the mom protecting her son since formation. I literally just made that up, hope it helps.
