Hey y'all!!

Today we started class of with our Animal of the Day!
Today the animal was the Dumbo Squid. It's called that because it has huge ears just like Dumbo the elephant from the Disney movies. The huge ears help it swim around in the sea.

After we finished talking about the Dumbo Squid, we started doing the General Classification of Invertebrates Lab and t
he Investigating Invertebrates Lab. We had to go from station to station and learn about different animals and do the packet pages along with them. We are going to be continuing this lab tomorrow because we didn't have enough time to finish today. Some of the different groups contain leeches, millipedes, coral, sponges, or jellyfish.
Homework:
Invertebrate chart with open chart quiz due tomorrow
Finish UP 13-14, and 19-27 for Monday
Invertebrate Profile (UP 3-4) due Monday

Muddiest Point!

What I'm confused about FSH and LH. Does a certain one signal the ovaries to secrete estrogen and the other one to secrete progesterone, or do they both signal the ovaries to secrete either hormone?

Thanks

Huntington's Disease

Huntington’s is a genetic brain disorder that will affect a person’s ability to think, talk, and move. It is passed down by autosomal dominant inheritance. This means that every person who inherits the diseased gene will end up getting the disease. It also means that each child will receive a normal copy of the gene from their mother and a normal or defective gene from their father. The gene for Huntington’s is found on chromosome four. In normal people their chromosome four will have the DNA sequence CAG repeating about ten to twenty six times. However, in people who have Huntington’s CAG repeats about forty or more times. Since this is so high it interferes with the function of the gene’s protein product. Yet, no one knows why the amount of CAG is so large.

Signs and Symptoms:

People who are affected by the disease don’t start showing symptoms until they are between the ages of thirty and fifty. The disease slowly worsens. Some symptoms are…

· Poor memory

· Depression or Mood swings

· Lack of coordination

· Twitching or uncontrolled movements

· Difficulty walking, speaking, or swallowing

· In later stages people need help doing very simple things such as getting dressed

Diagnosis and Detection:

When a woman is pregnant there are two different ways to find out if the baby will have the disease. One way is taking a sample from the fluid around the fetus, and the second way is to take a sample of the fetal cells from the placenta. Once the child is born doctors can test for the disease by doing neurological and psychological tests, or they can do a genetic test, which will tell if the child has the Huntington’s gene mutation. However, the genetic test cannot tell when the child will get the disease.

Treatments and Therapies:

The treatments that are out there do not slow the disease, but they can make a person who has the disease more comfortable. There are medications that can ease the feelings of depression and anxiety. Other types of medication can control the involuntary movements. There is also physical and speech therapy that can help a person with the disease live a more normal life.

Prevalence in the Population:

In the United States about one in every thirty thousand people have the disease. It is less common in Asians and Africans.

Life Expectancy:

Once a person has been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease they have about fifteen years left of their life.

Muddiest Point!

Hey Guys!

I'm sorta confused on how to find the genotypic ratio. We had a question like that on our quiz today and it made me realize I wasn't positive how to do that. If someone could help that'd be great!
Thanks!

Hello Everyone, Happy December!

Today in class we had a "POP" quiz, it was on the definitions. The words were Genotypes, Allele, Dominant Trait, Heterozygous, Phenotype, Recessive Trait, Homozygous, and Gene. Along with our "POP" quiz, we did a lot of practice with Punnett Squares. We learned that there were more than one type of punnett square. The two types are a 4 box Punnett Square and a 16 box Punnett Square. Each type is used for something different. There is the
  • Dihybrid Crosses, which use two sets of alleles from both parents
  • Incomplete Dominance, which is where alleles are NOT dominant or recessive
  • Co-Dominance, which is where both alleles are dominant and expressed EQUALLY... NOT blended.

We also learned about Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment. Which says that alleles (form of a gene) separate independently of each other. This process leads to MANY different gametes. The Law of Independent Assortment and the process of Crossing Over makes an INFINITE amount of gametes.

Hello everyone,

I just have a quick question about B-Cells... Are plasma cells the only part of B-Cell's or are there other parts?

Thanks!

Muddiest Point (Comment)

This is my comment for Samantha.
Which specific structures are you talking about? Ribosomes make protein, mitochondria convert chemical energy into food for the cell to use,and the nucleolus is where the ribosomes are found. The nucleus is the control center of the cell and the cytoplasm works with it. Hope this is helpful!

Muddiest Point!

Hi everyone!

During this unit I was a little confused about what the structures inside the cell do. I have notes on it, but it's still a little hard to follow. If someone could help that would be awesome!
Thanks.

Today in class we did our Enzyme Lab!

In this lab we had to determine the effects of temperature on enzyme activity. During this lab we used the enzyme which was Catalase and the substrate which was Hydrogen Peroxide Solution. Enzymes are: Proteins that speed up chemical reactions that take place in cells.

Some background information on the lab that we did was... Catalase: Is an enzyme that is found in blood and other cells. It speeds up the breakdown of Hydrogen Peroxide into water and oxygen. Also if hydrogen peroxide is left to build up in the cells, then the hydrogen peroxide turns toxic!!

The Experiment:

During this experiment each lab group h
ad to do different experiments using different materials to find out the bubble activity in the test tubes. This lab took the whole period for our class and was quite time consuming. However, it wasn't that difficult to accomplish the lab. For the results, we did not get group five's results, and the results for group two are a bit off because the average is wrong. Here is a picture of the results. The other two pictures are from the group with 100ÂșC.

Muddiest Point!

One of the main things that always confuses me is when there's a question asking you to state an organism that's both a 2nd and 3rd order consumer or a 4th and 5th order consumer. Another question I have is how to tell what the original source of energy on a food web is, we had a question like this on our ecology quiz and it really confused me.

Reflection of First Unit

I thought that our first unit was really interesting. I thought this because we learned so much so quick, but it wasn't that hard. Also, we did a lot of different experiments which I thought were fascinating. I realized that since class flies by we need to get a lot of things done and I need to focus a lot. I think that science this year won't be bad because so far some of the things we have been doing are a bit of review for me. I also think it will be fun because we are going to be learning about and doing so many different experiments with new materials. I am looking forward to this year in science.

That '70s Show

Hello Wisconsin!” One common phrase heard by all That ‘70s Show lovers. I have been watching this show with my older sister ever since I can remember. It is so amusing and hilarious because of the entire cast and crew. This show has been around since 1998 even though it seems to be from the seventies. That ‘70s Show does an amazing job of making every person who watches the show relive the seventies.

The Vista Cruiser… One of the main focuses of the show. This car belongs to Eric Forman who is played by Topher Grace. The car is featured in every single episode and happens to be everyone’s way of transportation. At the beginning of the show for seven seasons the kids appeared in the car singing the theme song. To hear the song click this link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpwOYiL_zRg. However in their last season, once Eric’s gone, they are in the basement for the theme song. I was so angry to see they had changed it because when everyone was in the car it was great. This car was called the third greatest car on TV and I have to agree with that. This is because there are so many great memories from the show while in the car. I could not believe that Wilmer Valderrama who plays Fez had bought the car at the end of season eight, for the very low price of $500.00. However, if I were to have one item from that show it would probably be the Vista Cruiser because that is where the gang had all their great times.

Eric’s basement, this is the place to be if you are part of this group of friends. One weird thing about the basement is even when Eric Forman (Topher Grace) left the show for good, the entire gang still gathered in his basement. Even though it was the place to be you would think that they would leave and find somewhere else to hang out. In my opinion, they should have found somewhere new to go, but it would make the show completely different. It also left you to think will Eric ever come back, which was a pretty good idea. I am so sad they stopped making this show, but it’s always on TV, so if you ever get the chance. Check it out!
